Part of my mind (and my heart) is still in Croatia

Last modified date

I can’t believe it’s already been nearly a month since the Circles of Change project ended and I returned home. After spending a year in Zagreb with Krugovi, it feels strange not to be there anymore. Some days I still wake up feeling like it’s time to go to my shift at the Donation Centre or visit one of our elderly beneficiaries. Or I try to say “hvala” to the cashier in the shop here. I miss my coworkers and friends, and I even miss walking around Novi Zagreb. Coming back was not that easy and even though I have many other things to do and think about now, I feel like a part of my mind (and my heart) is still in Croatia.

Volunteering as a part of the European Solidarity Corps is a truly unique experience. It not only gives a chance to make change and help the community but also allows and encourages the volunteers to develop themselves and their competences. For me, it was definitely a great and valuable time. Just like I wanted to, I got out of my comfort zone and tried something new – a different type of work in a different environment. I learned a lot, improved many of my soft skills and built up my confidence. On top of that, I met wonderful, kind and inspiring people and made real connections. That’s why, at the end of this experience, I’m left with lots of fun memories but also so much more than that. I’m sure it will stay with me for a long time and hold a great value for my future.
